I set out to take a shot of the Illawarra Flame Trees in Jamberoo, NSW, but quickly swapped out the lens for a telefoto to photograph this rainbow lorikeet who was having a field day amongst the red flowers. The Illawarra Flame Tree is a local icon of my old hood and can be found on the south east coast of New South Wales, Australia. Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 100-400mm at 400; 1/1250sec at f/14; ISO 800.
I never thought I'd get this close to a humpback whale. This was one of three eastern humpback whales that was so curious it came boat side. This image was taken just off Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. Such a privilege to see and great to see numbers recovering after hunting ended in 1979. The eastern humpback population is now at a healthier 28,000 growing from 8,000 in 1992. Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 100-400mm at 321mm; 1/1000sec at f/6.3; ISO 200.
Beware this image comes with a cuteness overload warning! This little Koala joey gave me a yawn while mum slept on. This was one of several Koala mum and joeys at the astounding Australia Zoo. This is a very impressive zoo, and a wonderful legacy of the late Steve Irwin, if not for this wee fella, the saltwater crocs are a marvel and the Australian reptile display is the best I've seen. Photographing a Koala joey takes some patience as they are only out of the pouch briefly. So I was delighted when this little guy opened his mouth. I think the Australian Rugby team could take a thing or two from the steely stare I observed in this Tasmanian Pademelon. This diminutive wallaby and I had a stare off for about 10 minutes as I positioned for the optimal frame. Taken on the Nut (aka Circular Head) in quaint Stanley, north west Tasmania. Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 100-400mm at 371mm; 1/25sec at f/5.6; ISO 1600.
This Tasmanian local posed beautifully with Banksia morsel in claw in the walk through aviary at the East Coast Natureworld wildlife sanctuary, in Bicheno, on the east coast of Tasmania. A great park and we were the only ones there save for their informative staff and of course the wildlife. Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 100-400mm at 200mm; 1/400sec at f/5; ISO 1600.
A humpback whale relaxes in the calm waters of the Pacific Ocean off the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. This is an Eastern Humpback whale and was one of 3 that we had the privilege of seeing. They were incredibly inquisitive and swam up to the boat a number of times. These guys are completing their migration north up the east coast and will soon be heading south again. The beach in the background is South Stradbroke Island. Canon 5D Mk III + Canon 100-400mm at 321mm; 1/1000sec at f/6.3; ISO 200.
The sleek black head of a humpback whale breaks the surface as it comes to take a look at our boat. One of several humpback whales during the annual migration on the east coast of Australia. This was just off Surfers Paradise, Queensland.
