To the left of the little island you can make out the wisps of steam from Port Latta’s iron ore plant, and to the right of the setting sun, the Nut in Stanley is but a blimp. It was precarious clambering over these rocks to get to this vantage point, but the striking colours, the amazing geology and this view over Pebbly Bay and Bass Strait make it a worthy scramble. The highlight for me was observing these lowland gorillas at feeding time. This reserve is part of the Aspinall Foundation @theaspinallfoundation, who are renowned for their conservation work and have relocated up to 50 gorillas to the wild in Africa after rearing them at this reserve, and their sister zoo, Howletts in Canterbury. As I learned on Saturday, gorillas avoid direct eye contact, so you have to be quick with your shot when they glance your way. Delighted I captured this one. This was one of three eastern humpback whales that was so curious it came boat side. This image was taken just off Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. Such a privilege to see and great to see numbers recovering after hunting ended in 1979. The eastern humpback population is now at a healthier 28,000 growing from 8,000 in 1992. This little Koala joey gave me a yawn while mum slept on. This was one of several Koala mum and joeys at the astounding Australia Zoo. This is a very impressive zoo, and a wonderful legacy of the late Steve Irwin, if not for this wee fella, the saltwater crocs are a marvel and the Australian reptile display is the best I've seen. Photographing a Koala joey takes some patience as they are only out of the pouch briefly. So I was delighted when this little guy opened his mouth. A great park and we were the only ones there save for their informative staff and of course the wildlife. This is an Eastern Humpback whale and was one of 3 that we had the privilege of seeing. They were incredibly inquisitive and swam up to the boat a number of times. To the left of the little island you can make out the wisps of steam from Port Latta’s iron ore plant, and to the right of the setting sun, the Nut in Stanley is but a blimp. It was precarious clambering over these rocks to get to this vantage point, but the striking colours, the amazing geology and this view over Pebbly Bay and Bass Strait make it a worthy scramble.
